Pictures and Words

Hi Family, Hi Friends! (I am sending friendly waves and one of those grins when your teeth get stuck on your gums).  Here are some pictures taken by Brian and I starring Scarlett C.  She's almost 1.  Holy smokes.  I don't think I'll feel super weird about her age (and my age) until she is 5.  I cannot picture myself having a 5 year old.  I'll be like way grown up and parental by then.

I hope you've noticed that our new SLR camera takes prettier, livelier photographs than the cameras on our phones. If you can't, then crap that was a big waste of money.  I'm planning on taking a class at the local high school in the summer to learn how to use its black mysterious functions and to increase my photographic prestige.  If I like it then I'll take a following editing class.  Maybe I can put more credentials behind my name: Natalie Green BS MLS ASCP TM Also Really Good At Taking Photos Of Her Family And Sometimes Other Things.  Education is power.

Young Hermione with first wand.

Always pointing.  Impolite some might say.

This is my "favorite face" Scar pulls....

...but this new one is pretty good too.  Her scrunched smile of excitement.  Reminds me of my brother Ben.

The rumors are true, teething is hard!

Smoldering husband with his Batman Lincoln shirt "The caped emancipator".

What does the penguin say? Seriously want to know.

Brian's the best at portraits.

Fav Fruit: Strawberries.  So favorite that she tipped a box over into her stroller at the store and started feasting.

Her "ImmaPunchYou" face.

Climbs on top of the ottoman at every waking hour. Awesome.

That One Time Scar Met A Dog Her Size

These pictures are way back from December taken at the Annual Christmas White Elephant Exchange at Dr. Guyman's house.  Don't worry, we took home the good stuff; we got a bed bug killing contraption and a chocolate scented gluestick. I was just going through  pics on our fairly new and seldom-used Canon and I wanted these specific ones committed to blogitory.  I didn't think peeps would mind seein' a crawling babe and lil' pup exchanging introductions.  To quote one of our favorite Animal Planet's  series, "Too Cute!"

I only wish we had gotten a snapshot of little Cody with Scar's binky in his tiny hidden black mouth.  It was hilarious, like seeing Jeff Green in a bonnet.  Cody's human-parents were very apologetic, but we don't care about germs when it provides the whole party with uproarious laughter and encoring chuckles all night. Too Cute!

How Motherhood Has Changed Me

And How It Hasn't.

Before having a baby, I often wondered how motherhood would change me.  Sometimes I feared that I would become an ornery, strict, no-fun-allowed tight-wad and that I would always be close to anger.  I mean, I wasn't like that at all in that present, but I had been warned about how hard parenting can be and to  make sure we knew what we were getting into with phrases like:
"Remember, you can't give them back."
"Enjoy yourselves now, when you don't have kids."
or "I have the best birth control for you, watch my children for an hour."

Woah. These babies must carry a whole lotta baggage.  I was worried that the stress of child-rearing would cause the small portion of my control freak red personality to take over my body and actions.  You don't believe I have any of that in my personality?  Ask Brian about the time he mercilessly beat me at Settlers of Catan and I beat him back with my shoe. I think it left a mark; I still feel ashamed.

While my sweet forgiving husband and I were baby-mooning in St. George when we had t-minus 2 months to go, I jokingly expressed the fear to my cousin, Audrey.  She has three little babes, her first two, not even one year apart.  She and her husband are so great, and I have always looked up to her as my cool older cousin who is so fun and put-together, though I'm sure she'd deny my compliments.
After she'd heard my concerns masked by sarcasm, she completely disagreed.  She said, "When you have kids, the personality you have now just gets brought out more."  Then she finished her little bunny song game with her girls..."Hop, hop, hop...now, Stop!"  Her little girls froze and giggled and it was hilarious.
I'm glad she was right and that my dark Darth Vadar side didn't take over.  There are times when I'm sleep deprived and a little perturbed when Scarlett won't sleep at night or when she disallows any progress of housework for attention, but being a mom is FUN. It definitely changes you, but not all of you.  Here three things that are new to me in motherhood.
   1.  Picking noses, wiping bums, smelling bums, holding gagged up food, cleaning vomit, holding a baby on my hip while I cook one-handed, wiping tears, digging for ear wax, extracting poop from a blow out in the crib, this list goes on and on...  Somehow all of this is NBD.  I never gag, I sometimes shudder, but I have no problem getting done what needs to be done.
       2.  My body image isn't constantly on the brain any more.  Maybe gaining a bunch of lbs and hearing magnificent words of praise for being big for 9 months dissolved that annoying body consciousness I had most days.  Now I listen a lot more to how my body feels, instead of how it looks. And heck, it feels awesome to not be pregnant after all that. Three days after having Scarlett I felt like a Supermodel.  Breastfeeding and exercise have also helped, just saying.
5 days after Scarlett's birth.  I felt great. That tiny thing is Scar.
    3.  I constantly think about Scarlett Claire.  I think about her when I sleep. I worry about her when we leave her with babysitters. I think about what foods would be good to balance her diet.  I always know exactly how many hours she slept in a day and how many times she has pooped.  Even when Brian's around, I usually cannot sleep unless she is sleeping.  I could identify her cry in a room full of crying babies.  That is definitely different, but I hear the worry just gets worse.
However, don't you fret you mommy-to-be's because you don't really lose yourself to mom-hood.  You can still be you.  Here's three things that I'm still me at:
    1.  I still find ways to do stuff I enjoy.  I work out.  I read a book.  I make plans for outings and meals.  I take longish showers and dress with a little flair (for me) for the day.  I still play volleyball and go swimming.  This helps keep my mood joyous.
I think this glamorous shot was taken as I was putting my hair up in an extravagant ponytail.
A 7-year-old girl helped us get down from our very high horse at the end of our ride.
 Hashtag Humbling.
  2.  We still laugh about everything.  If you can believe it, Brian and I probably giggle more than we used to, because babies are funny little creatures.  Its harder to laugh at the messes and spills, but for us its a pretty powerful picker-upper to be silly. We'll probably have to start filtering our sarcastic comments when she understands things a little more, Ah-hem.  We're a work in progress. Baby steps.
Scarlett Rush broke one of the guitar strings but it was totally worth if for this classy ensemble.
     3.  In the words of Frozen, we still Let It Go!  Brian has always been good at keepin' his cool, and the longer I have been married to him, the better I have become.  Sometimes I get an idea of how things should be in my head, and I dwell on them when life decides differently.  Its important to accept the things I can't control (like Scarlett's 8 colds this season or long Iowa winters) or else I turn into a unproductive whiny person- no one likes listening to a negative broken record. I especially think its important to cut other parents some slack when children aren't behaving the way you'd appreciate to.

Anyway, that's it for now.  Scarlett is crying rather dramatically for her corn snacks, which are just out of reach.  She's eaten half the can already.  Its mom time.

Goals for 2014

Feels like -42. Yuck.
Hey there.  I haven't blogged for my following friends and family in quite some time.  Well, I've been in the slums of Iowa January weather.  Every other week we've been hit with arctic air to the point of schools being closed, not because of snow or ice, but because its cold.  I think we've had three or four days where the temp has hit below -30 (once -50) because of the wind chill.  Not nice.  You'd think I'd be bloggin' like yo' momma' with all that time indoors, but I just haven't had the will or inspiration.  Indoors just doesn't do it for me.  I was meant to be free in the wilderness, at least, every once in a while.

What we do with 50% of our time
Finally I received the inspiration for written word from my cute un-cooped up school-attending husband.  Last night he asked sweetly,"Why haven't you written in your blog in awhile?"
And I dramatically whined/sighed (poor husband is pretty much the only one who gets this behavior), "Meh, I got nothing to write about."
And he said, gently, "Just write about what's going on in your life."
So since I have one blog fan who enjoys my monologue journal entries, I will blog on.
In a relief society lesson, I was encouraged to make goals for the year, and hopefully for life. Here are a few of them that I've somehow been keeping up on for this month, some for the first time ever.  There are some helpful strategies I've been using to complete them, so feel free to steal my methods if you dig.

1. I have been reading the Book of Mormon, and actually pondering the messages I've read.  I admit, that is BIG for me. My help: Instagram.  Weird and sad that Instagram has been one of the best things to help me read every day. I check my Insta habitually, so I'm always reminded to read.  If you want to join, follow bofm365.   There is so much I don't know about the BOM.  Brian knows so much! I blame/credit his mission. I like to discuss scriptures with him and ask him many questions.  I'm learning much.

2. I work out e'ery day. Not really new to me, I love to work out.  It cleanses my body and soul and colon.  Really.  On the days where I can't go to the gym or I don't have time for a YouTube workout video, I do one of these workouts at fithomerivalry.blogspot.com.  My sister in law, Ashley introduced me to it. Compete with me.  They take around 12 minutes to complete, but they're butt burners, man.

3. Stimulate Scarlett's mind every day.  Her mind is a pretty easy thing to stimulate, but not so easy to focus.  I like to take a minute and sing songs to her or play a game or throw a puppet show.  It can be easy to forget to do this with how important housework and projects and my own stuff seems, but she loves it.
Baby Be Walkin

4.Work on continuing my education.  I have a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Lab Science and I'd prefer that my hard-earned certificate MLS (ASCP)cm doesn't expire in 2015.  Gotta start earning my CE credits.  (This is probably a bunch of mumbo jumbo to you, but I'm writing it down because that's the first step).

5.  Cook.  Occasionally I'm pretty done with the day by the time Brian gets home and I don't feel like throwing something together, but I'm sure he loves coming home to a hot meal.  I've been pretty dang awesome at making dinner every day in January. The key for me is to shake it up and try something new once in a while.  Pinterest, baby.
Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

'Twas good
6.  I have two goals for hygiene.  #1 is don't shave my legs until winter stocking season is over.  This is more of a this is going to happen than I want this to happen. Is anyone with me?  Is anyone grossed out?  I understand. #2 Wear makeup and fix hair for church.   9:00 church threw me a little at first, but final preparations can be made in the car, even when Brian hits the breaks in little spurts while I'm applying mascara.  I figure I'd probably get polished for a date night or nice dinner or concert, so I should probably show that much respect to my Sunday best. But hey,  that's just my interpretation and no one really notices makeup anyway.  I know I never do, unless there is A LOT missing, if you know what I mean.

Well that's my goals for now.  Nothing crazy and fairly attainable.  Namaste.
